When Kresta DeZwaan graduated with plans to become a paralegal, she expected to follow a traditional path into a law firm. But in 2004, a newspaper job posting for a Legal Administrative Assistant at Gentex caught her attention and changed the course of her career.
“The rest is history—22 years later, I’m still here,” DeZwaan said.
DeZwaan began her career at Gentex handling patent filings, trademark management, and administrative responsibilities. In those early days, much of the work was done manually, from filing contracts and records to mailing patent applications. While her early responsibilities centered on patents, trademarks, and administrative support, DeZwaan eventually moved into a Paralegal role. There, she began working more closely with contracts, negotiations, and non-disclosure agreements.
“This shift was a turning point for me and where I truly found my niche,” she said.
As her expertise grew, so did her responsibilities. She advanced to Senior Paralegal, where she had more opportunities to contribute and demonstrate her dedication. Today, she serves as a Senior Contract Specialist, focusing on supplier agreements, terms and conditions, and purchasing-related contracts that help support the business.
No two days are exactly alike. DeZwaan starts each morning by identifying her top priorities while staying flexible enough to respond to urgent requests as they arise. Her work may involve negotiating non-disclosure agreements, supplier terms and conditions, material evaluation agreements, or consulting agreements. She also serves as a resource across the company, helping answer a wide range of legal and contract-related questions.
While her role has evolved significantly over the years, one thing has remained constant: the people.
For DeZwaan, the relationships she has built throughout her career are the biggest reason she has stayed at Gentex for more than two decades. She is especially proud of the trust she has earned and values the willingness of her colleagues to share their time and expertise when challenges arise.
Early in her career, she noticed that many employees tended to avoid interacting with the legal department. As the department expanded and relationships strengthened, perceptions began to change.
“Over time, as the department grew and relationships developed, people began to better understand that we are here to help them succeed while protecting the company,” DeZwaan said. “That shift took time, but it made a big difference.”
A motto that has guided DeZwaan throughout her career is simple: “Work smarter, not harder.” She puts that philosophy into practice by remaining adaptable and continuously developing her skills in an ever-evolving environment. By investing in her own growth, she has been able to work more efficiently, tackle new challenges, and contribute strategically to her team.
“I’m always looking for ways to continue growing in my role by deepening my expertise in complex contract negotiations and supporting the business more strategically,” she said.
Looking back, DeZwaan’s career at Gentex has been shaped by strong relationships, a commitment to continuous growth, and a willingness to take an unexpected opportunity. What began as a departure from the traditional law-firm path became a rewarding long-term career.
She is proud to be one of the many employees who have built lasting careers at Gentex.
